Small, historic island village centered on Silver Lake Harbor and Irvin Garrish Highway (NC-12). Walkable to local eateries, galleries, the Ocracoke Preservation Society, the historic lighthouse and harborfront; beaches and Springer’s Point nature areas are a short drive/bike ride. The vibe is relaxed and coastal — local businesses, seasonal events and outdoor recreation dominate, and the speed limit and local culture favor bikes and golf carts over heavy traffic.

Primary transport: public vehicle ferries from Hatteras Island and private/charter aircraft. Within the village most people walk, bike or use golf carts; several rental shops offer bikes and carts. A free village tram runs a loop between the Silver Lake Ferry Terminal and the village. Limited local taxi/van services and seasonal shuttle options operate; no regular commercial public transit. Ocracoke Airport (W95) handles private charters and general aviation (daylight operations only). Navigation apps can be unreliable — check ferry schedules and allow extra time during summer peak season.
