Small, historic seaside village feel — shops, cafés, galleries and marinas cluster along Irvin Garrish Highway (the village section of NC-12). Key local landmarks: Silver Lake Harbor (ferry terminal), Ocracoke Lighthouse, Community Square, and nearby Lifeguard Beach. Expect low light pollution, seasonal crowds (peak in summer), and largely residential/vacation-rental architecture.
Most visitors park and explore on foot; the village is compact and highly walkable. Bikes and golf carts are the most common rental options and are practical for short trips. Hyde County runs a free summer tram looping the village (multiple stops). Off-island access is by vehicle or passenger ferry, private boat, or small plane. Road parking near the ferry terminal is limited and often first-come; long-term/overnight terminal parking is restricted.
Guests have private access to their assigned room or apartment, with convenient parking near the unit. During your stay, you’re also welcome to enjoy all shared Bluff Shoal spaces, including:
· Open ‘Southern Style’ Front Porch
· Community Back Deck
· Harbor/Waterfront Deck with Marina View
· Community Park Grill
· Outdoor Picnic Table Dining
Our Private Pier on Silver Lake—perfect for coffee, boat-watching, sunsets, and spotting wildlife.
These outdoor areas are shared with other guests, so we appreciate everyone keeping things tidy and respectful.
Please note: Bluff Shoal is a non-smoking property and pets are not permitted.
