Small, historic seaside village feel — shops, cafés, galleries and marinas cluster along Irvin Garrish Highway (the village section of NC-12). Key local landmarks: Silver Lake Harbor (ferry terminal), Ocracoke Lighthouse, Community Square, and nearby Lifeguard Beach. Expect low light pollution, seasonal crowds (peak in summer), and largely residential/vacation-rental architecture.

Most visitors park and explore on foot; the village is compact and highly walkable. Bikes and golf carts are the most common rental options and are practical for short trips. Hyde County runs a free summer tram looping the village (multiple stops). Off-island access is by vehicle or passenger ferry, private boat, or small plane. Road parking near the ferry terminal is limited and often first-come; long-term/overnight terminal parking is restricted.
